Original Barber & Beauty Salon
This summer, I discovered Original Barber & Beauty Salon! This retro shop is a photographer’s dream, but the story of how it came to be is even more special. Read on to learn about the owners and brother/sister team of Jenesa Montoya and Esteban Renteria.
Ashley: Why do you call it Original Barber & Beauty Salon?
Esteban: Because of the original equipment-- the original barber chairs, the barber pole, the barber hair dryers. Just the fact that it is all original, and there is no new equipment in here.
Ashley: I think it's really special that this is a brother and sister team. Do you want to elaborate on that at all?
Esteban: We had no choice, we are stuck with each other. She (Jenesa) started cutting hair, and I saw how much money she was making on a Saturday, and I thought, “I can do that.” So we just combined our efforts after I graduated to open the shop.
Jenesa: We’ve been in business together for sixteen years.
Ashley: Have you always been at this location?
Jenesa: No, the first shop was in Barelas, and then we moved here.
Ashley: What made you decide to do all the pink and retro décor on your side, Jenesa, and the old school barber décor on your side, Esteban?
Esteban: We had all the original chairs, but it was mainly because the building used to be an old garage, so we wanted to make it retro. The black and white retro tile was already here.
Ashley: What do you both specialize in, or what are you known for?
Jenesa: At my shop, I am known for my up-dos.
Esteban: And over here it is sculpting. Almost like what a tree trimmer would do to the bush.
So you get a lot of people in here for wedding hair?
Yes—weddings, quinceaneras, proms. Anything that involves an up-do.
Ashley: If you could say anything about your place that you really want people to know about, what would it be?
Esteban: Everybody respects each other. As soon as you walk into the shop, someone will shake your hand. We are family owned and oriented.
The reason I have pink is because I have loved the color since I was little.
A girl after my own heart!
Also, God is the one that blessed us with our business and has given us our talent.
