I Scream Ice Cream
I have been cooling off at I Scream Ice Cream for years, but had never known that the quirky shop is a rocker hangout when bands tour through New Mexico. Boredom has no place here, as the walls are filled with retro toys and memorabilia, which guests are welcome to enjoy. You might notice the vast collection of movie props, signed records and photos hanging on the walls. To name a few, Ian Anderson of Jetho Tull, Frankie Valli, Kenny Rogers, George Thorogood, and Chubby Checker. Even Robert Duvall and Jeff Bridges donated the hats they wore on the set of “Crazy Heart”.
Besides having delicious ice cream and a warm atmosphere, one of the reasons for the celebrity draw is that owner Bill Warren is a retired rocker himself. During the sixties in New York, he was a session drummer and vocalist to many famous bands of that era. In the shop hangs a signed album from John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band—Bill is on that. Below is a video for “Gimme Gimme Good Lovin’” by Crazy Elephant—those are his vocals and drumming as well. Bill’s band 1910 Fruitgum Company sold millions of albums and toured. As a lover of rock n’ roll, these details delighted me.
I Scream Ice Cream has been in business for 14 years, and during this time, the owners have gone above and beyond to lift the community. For instance, cancer patients of UNMH and Presbyterian receive free ice cream, and every foster child in Bernalillo County gets a free birthday party.
The shop has received numerous accolades, such as Best Ice Cream Parlor in NM by MSNBC, and AAA Top 20 Ice Cream Shop in the US.
See for yourself! Check out their outdoor movie nights on the second Friday of the month once the sun goes down!
